Goodbye, Planet Earth

I recently discovered AtomA, an atmospheric Swedish ambient / post-rock / prog metal band, while browsing music videos on YouTube, and they completely blew me away with their beautiful and otherworldly sound.

The band describes their music as “a home for refugee souls of a planet in decay” and their music certainly has an apocalyptic feel to it. After listening to this album several times, Skylight has easily become one of my favorites. I love their use of synth, minimal vocals, and attention to detail in the amazing production quality of this debut album.

AtomA’s newly-released video for “Rainmen” visually captures the juxtaposition of simplicity and complexity in their music. The shifting color gradients also reflect the narrative quality of their rich soundscapes.

You can listen to a preview of Skylight here and purchase the album from Napalm Records.

Marimekko S / S 2012

From their original patterns to bold colors, it’s no surprise that Finland’s Marimekko is one of my favorite brands.

The fragrance of spring’s first flowers. The sound of arrival and departure in the busy port. The colourful market, alive with smiling people, fresh vegetables, fish, seagulls. Long, leisurely hours spent with friends in cafés, parks, the nearby islands. Bike rides to the allotment garden to witness the miracle of growth. Moments of life in Helsinki…

Marimekko’s Spring / Summer 2012 collection has many beautiful ’60s and ’70s silhouettes, as well as trousers that are reminiscent of David Bowie’s iconic 1972 photoshoot with Masayoshi Sukita. I love how this collection playfully incorporates the mismatched prints trend by combining stripes with floral prints.

Dale Comte

Dale Comte is an emerging digital artist from Chengdu, China. Another Tolkien fan brought his piece Once Upon a Time in Hobbiton to my attention a few days ago, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since then. His attention to detail, strong diagonal compositions, use of atmospheric perspective, and vibrant application of color truly set his digital paintings apart from the rest.
